| IND Emergency Response Team Receives Federal Recognition |
|
|
 |
Since the IND emergency response team was formed in the 1990s to
complement the response of the airport's fire and police departments to
aircraft accidents, the group has grown in size and scope. Thanks to its
enhanced capabilities, proven through the completion of standardized
training in several areas, the team has been certified by the State of
Indiana Department of Homeland Security as a Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT).
The CERT concept pairs citizen volunteer
teams with first responders who train them to provide initial aid to
victims in several critical ways. Since 1993, when training was made
available nationally by FEMA, communities in 28 States and Puerto Rico
have participated in the CERT training program.
The IAA's CERT team consists of personnel from the airport's engineering, maintenance, and operations departments and includes mechanics, heavy equipment operators, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and more. They have augmented IND's fire and police responders during winter storms, excessive-heat emergencies, and severe thunderstorms and have provided medical assistance, damage assessments, and other urgently needed support.

Considering the national brands it was pitted against, the IAA fared fairly well in the PR News 2012 PR Awards program, garnering honorable mention in the "Word of Mouth/Viral" category for a flash mob performance of "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana that took place in Civic Plaza as travelers arrived for the 2011 Indianapolis 500. It also received an honorable mention in the "Online Communication" category for maximizing the airport's "front door to the city" role when Indianapolis hosted Super Bowl XLVI.
