History of the Program

The Indianapolis Airport Authority’s art program began in 2005 as part of the Midfield Project, when requests for proposals for permanent public art in the new Indianapolis International Airport were issued. From an initial pool of more than 550 applicants from the U.S. and several foreign nations, the authority selected a number of site-specific, architecturally integrated, and state-alone works of art for what would become the Col. H. Weir Cook Memorial Terminal Building.

The program was created to provide visitors from around the world with exposure to a variety of artists and art forms, raising the level of interest and enjoyment of art for all who visit IND.
